E4 Driver's periscope

The E4 periscope is a unity vision periscope designed as a replacement for both the AFV No. 44 MK2 and MK3 periscopes. Relative to the AFV No. 44, the E4 is a far superior  design and has enhanced vision characteristics.

 

Unlike the original periscope, the E4 has been designed with separate upper and lower assemblies. This has the advantage of being able to salvage either half of the periscope that has sustained damage either in combat or accidental reasons. The E4 has a desiccated ballistic gap that gives enhanced ballistic properties, preventing the transference of shock to the lower prism. The AFV No.44 periscope design and construction are decades old and was produced using a single central main housing to which both the upper and lower prisms were permanently fitted. In contrast, only modern materials are used in the E4.

The Kent Periscopes E4 design uses the same space envelope enabling the use of existing Vehicle mounted wash wipe systems and clamping mechanisms to be used. As a result no vehicle modification is required to use the E4 as a replacement.

The periscope has a two prism system with desiccated ballistic gap. Each half of the periscope is collimated to +/- 15' of arc. This enables either half of the Periscope to be replaced in the event of damage, and maintain the original collimation angle tolerance.

Laser protection

A laser filter cassette can be included if required. Housed internally within the centre of the periscope, the cassette is protected from damage and is installed such that the periscope can be upgraded over time in order to respond to changes in threat level.

Typical levels of protection required by our customers include YAG 1064nm (1.064µm) or Ruby 694nm (0.694µm).  These levels of protection can be provided alone or on a combined basis.  We can also work with our customers to supply laser protection filters that meet other specific wavelength requirements.
